Southern Miss football media day recap
On Saturday, the Southern Miss football team took the field at MM Roberts Stadium for its first scrimmage of fall camp. Afterwards, players and coaches took to the mic for USM’s annual media day with a lot of focus on senior running back Ito Smith.
In 2016, the dynamic playmaker carried the Golden Eagles on offense, leading the team in scoring with 19 total touchdowns. He returns for his final season in Hattiesburg as one of the best in the nation and one of only two FBS players with more than 1,000 rushing and 400 receiving.
That’s some rare company for a former three star recruit out of Mobile, Alabama, but even more rare is the versatility that makes Smith so special. Southern Miss Head Football Coach Jay Hopson said, “He’s a guy that sometimes he’s magical with the ball in his hands, he really is. You saw he’s tackled and then he pops out and there he goes. He’s as a dynamic player as you’re ever going to watch on Saturday night.”
“I have the ability. I’m one of the older guys on the team so all of the younger guys they’re going to look up to us, so just showing them the way how we handle things at Southern Miss, you know? How we work hard, and how things go around here, you know? And me just, I don’t think my role is going to change because I got the ball a lot last year,” said Smith.
Last year, Smith led the Golden Eagles with more than 300 touches on offense. George Payne was the only other player to get more than 100.
