Southern Miss football holds first spring practice of Will Hall era

When Southern Miss hired will Hall to be its 22nd head football coach, it didn’t take long for him to prove his worth as a recruiter, putting together an 11-member signing day class comprised of ten three-star recruits just two weeks after getting the job.

Which brings us to the here and now, finally getting the chance to prove his worth as a coach. First day of spring practice for the Golden Eagles on the back of an off-season with plenty of positive momentum.

USM ended its 2020 campaign with an upset win over reigning Conference USA champion Florida Atlantic and now return two defensive stars thought to have been in the transfer portal in Racheem Boothe and D’Iberville alum Jacques Turner.

One down, 14 to go, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday for the next five weeks, but still a long way to go for the Black and Gold who already have a new spin on competition in this new era. Linebacker Swayze Bozeman said, “Coach Hall, he’s doing great. He’s doing nothing but projecting positive energy everywhere we go. We’re uplifting each other while we compete, which is really good to have as a team. Lots of competition but also team unity and team bonding which is what we’re doing so I really love the direction Coach Hall is taking us.”

Coach Hall said, “We want to get after each other. Competition makes you better. It pushes you. We’re building that in our program, but at the end, it’s over, hey, let’s high-five each other. If De-Mo caught a pass on Malik Shorts, I want them to high-five and I want Malik to say hey, man, bring it again tomorrow. And I want De-Mo to look at Malik and say, you bring it tomorrow. Let’s keep sharpening each other’s blade and making each other better because at the end, we’ve got to build a culture where we’re going to make each other the best we can be every day. But then when it’s over we’ve got to love each other and hug each other and know, man, we’re all Black and Gold and doing this thing together.”

USM plans to hold a spring game at the Rock on March 27th at 9:30 a.m. The school has yet to announce attendance plans for the game.
