Southern Miss eyes third straight C-USA Championship
If there’s one thing Southern Miss knows how to do and do it well, it’s how to play winning baseball at the end of May.
After winning the 2016 Conference USA Tournament in Hattiesburg in 2016, USM made it to championship Sunday all three years at Biloxi’s MGM Park, celebrating regional dogpiles in both 2018 and 2019.
Fast-forward to 2021 for the first league tournament since the start of COVID-19 and the Golden Eagles are going to have to prove all that Memorial Day weekend success hasn’t just been a by-product of home-state advantage.
19th ranked USM heads to Ruston, Louisiana as the three seed in this year’s tournament, having posted a league mark of 22-9 and an overall record of 35-17.
Offensively, the black and gold are led by the 14 home runs and 55 RBIs of freshman outfielder Reed Trimble, who says they’re still defending champs until proven otherwise. “We have, in my opinion, the best team in the conference. And I think a lot of other people know that, too. But you can’t just be known as the best team and go in there and win it just because you’re quote, unquote the best team. You’ve got to go out there and you’ve got to play hard, give all your effort, leave it all on the field, and if we do that, I think we will win.”
USM leads off its post-season run at 7:30 tomorrow night against six seed Western Kentucky. The tournament is an eight team, double elimination field.
