Southern Miss bounces back at UTSA

Keon Howard’s first chance as USM’s starting quarterback was over after just one half of football, but as is the case in life most of the time, the sophomore got a second chance at UTSA.
Kwadra Griggs had been leading the Southern Miss offense admirably as of late, but he was held out this week due to an unspecified injury. In steps Howard, who completed 75 percent of his passes to go along with three touchdowns.
The end result was a 31-29 upset win for the Golden Eagles who were desperate to get back in the running in the Conference USA standings, just like Howard was desperate to make the most of his shot at redemption. Southern Miss Offensive Coordinator Shannon Dawson said, “I think Hop alluded to that when he talked to you guys is that going into that game, the decision I really had to make is do you play with a 60 percent Kwadra or a 100 percent Keon. I mean there’s no doubt that the right thing was and Keon was playing well.”
Southern Miss Head Football Coach Jay Hopson said, “I just felt like he managed the game real well, he graded out real well. Just played an outstanding game and we, Coach Dawson and I both thought that he would have a really big game and he did. But he’s a humble guy and he knows that’s one game.”
That was Howard’s first game with multiple touchdown passes in his Southern Miss career.
