Southern Miss baseball riding the ranked wave

They say all good things must come to an end and in the case of Southern Miss, it’s program best 15-game winning streak did come to an end at the end of last month.

Yet there’s no end in sight for what USM could still achieve down the stretch.

Golden Eagles are on a steady flight path, having won five out of their last 11 ever since the streak coming into their final weekend series against Middle Tennessee.

Today, the Golden Eagles on the verge of winning their first regular season league crown since 2018 in their final season in Conference USA.

All part of what’s been a banner season for 17th ranked Southern Miss, having been ranked as high as number three in the country earlier this season, yet another program best.

According to the Montenegro brothers, USM has been in a groove because they all groove so well together. Catcher Rodrigo Montenegro said, “Honestly, what I can best describe for this team is the chemistry that we have as a team altogether. And that’s basically what has brought us to where we are right now. The chemistry that we have built throughout, starting in August, and now we’re here.”

Outfielder Gabe Montenegro said, “It’s definitely been an amazing year having to come out here and show what we’ve been working for the past year. Like we have incredible players, they love playing the game of baseball. We have incredible coaches. And then just being able to come out here and play and being ranked, it’s just been a great season.”

If USM ends up hosting a regional, it will be the first time since 2017.

Southern Miss puts the clamps on the C-USA title tonight with a 9-4 win over MTSU. It’s sixth and final regular season league crown.
