Smoking Ban Effective in Diamondhead

It’s been three days since we entered 2016 and three days since a smoking ban has been effective in Diamondhead.
How do residents feel about this ban and how is it affecting local businesses? News 25’s Kristen Durand reports.
Whether you’re eating at a restaurant in Diamondhead or standing within five feet of the door, you may not light up a cigarette, thanks to an ordinance that restricts smoking in public places. This ordinance is a breath of fresh air to some residents.
Resident Brenda Bauaer said, “I’m all for anyone making their own decisions of what they want to do but I’m glad that they would ban it in some public areas so that those of us that have chosen not to smoke or don’t want to introduce the smoke to our children have that option to go to those areas and not have to inhale that secondhand smoke.”
Diamondhead resident Steve Garman said, “It makes sense to me. I don’t think anybody in the world should smoke, personally.”
The ordinance passed with a 5 to 1 vote by the City Council. City leaders say the ordinance could make the city eligible for more grants but that it’s mainly a step toward looking out for the overall health of the residents.
The mayor is not on board with the idea and he’s not the only one. “There were a couple of people who were against it because they feel like it’s too much government intrusion and so forth. At some point, you have to deal with what we think is best for the community,”said Councilman at Large Ernie Knobloch
Many who are against the ban say putting out the smoke could lead to suffocating businesses, concerned that restaurants and lounges that used to allow smoking will pay the price for losing customers.
Whether you’re for or against Diamondhead’s smoking ban, the city is now smoke free, no ifs, ands, or butts about it.
