Smoke Odor Causes Evacuation

An air conditioning problem caused employees to evacuate the Stifel Nicolaus building this morning after smelling smoke. According to Gulfport Fire Battalion Chief Chris Henerson crews turned off the power to the air conditioning unit and notified management. Multiple trucks with the Gulfport Fire Department rushed to downtown Gulfport before 10 trying to find the source of the smoke odor. Two alarms were going off in the three story building which is home to multiple businesses including the FBI Office. Thanks to the quick action of a few employees who smelled the smoke, no one was injured. Hannah Reed smelled smoke in the office. She said, “I was sitting at my desk and we started smelling smoke and the alarm instantly went off and so we walked outside and called the fire department and they came right away.”
Nicolaus building is located on 14th Street in downtown Gulfport. Employees were allowed back into the building around 11 a.m.
