Slavonian Ladies Auxiliary makes pusharatas
Tonight while you’re sleeping, the Slavonian Ladies Auxiliary will be taking shifts to cook dozens of pusharatas just in time for Christmas.
The sweet fried pastry is popular in Croatia and Slovenia and for over 40 years, they’ve been a holiday hit in South Mississippi. The Slavonian ladies and their helpers started taking orders at Thanksgiving. Around this time every year they prepare thousands overnight.
As the oldest living Slavonian Ladies Auxiliary member will tell you, everybody loves their pusharatas. Slavonian Ladies Auxiliary Member Susie Jurich said, “They can eat a dozen at one time without stopping. My mom did this and I was a little girl so I watched her so now I’m doing it and my daughters are doing it.”
President of the Slavonian Ladies Auxiliary Faye Misko says twelve hundred and 25 dozen pusharatas have been ordered and one hundred dozen are on the waiting list.
Biloxi residents who ordered or hope to get some leftovers will line up at the Slavonian Lodge tomorrow morning for the tasty treat.
