Shrimping Season Begins Today

Shrimping season began today and this morning coast shrimpers wasted no time firing up their boats and dropping their nets.
Over 300 boats hit the Gulf Coast waters today looking to catch some shrimp. But, shrimpers weren’t the only ones working the waters today. The Department of Marine Resources was also out. Safety was their main goal today.
Chief Keith Davis, with DMR, said, “We want to keep the fishermen working, but we want to keep them working in a safe environment. So, we make sure that we have a plan so that we can go out and insure they have all of the safety gear on board.”
This year, DMR may have fewer shrimpers to keep an eye on. They’ve issued only just over 600 licenses last week, which is a hundred less than last year.
Those on the water today told News 25, they’ve seen a significant decline in the size of the shrimp and in their catches. There’s also been a decline in revenue due to the importing of shrimp from overseas.
