Shoebox Float Winners on Display
“Extra! Extra! Read all about it!” That was the theme of this year’s Mardi Gras Shoebox Float Contest.
Now, the winning floats from elementary schools and junior high students are on display at Biloxi City Hall. From the Saints to the Shuckers to even the infrastructure woes in the city, these young artists portrayed it all. The competition is sponsored every year by the city of Biloxi, the school district, the Mardi Gras Museum and the Gulf Coast Carnival Association. Its aim is to instill the traditions of Mardi Gras into the younger generations.
City of Biloxi Public Affairs Manager Vincent Creel said, “It gives them a chance to show their Mardi Gras talents. It’s designed to perpetuate the cause of Mardi Gras. It’s designed to get children to appreciate the colorful history of Mardi Gras and as such they will become future leaders in Mardi Gras.”
The winners will be recognized at tomorrow’s city council meeting. Each will receive a savings bond and certificate of achievement.
