Gulf Islands National Seashore will reopen Ship Island immediately, National Park Service says
OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. (WXXV) — Gulf Islands National Seashore will reopen Ship Island immediately following temporary repairs to the pier.
The island will resume regular operations, but Fort Massachusetts will remain closed. The National Park Service has awarded a contract for permanent repairs to the pier and expects to start work in mid-August.
Ship Island, and all national seashore areas, were closed Friday, June 5, as Tropical Storm Cristobal approached the Gulf Coast. The powerful storm caused significant damage to ferry pier at Ship Island. Islands without facilities were reopened on June 12. However, the damage to ferry pier at Ship Island forced the island to remain closed.
Visitors can find ticket prices, schedules, and other information about the Ship Island ferry can be found at www.msshipisland.com.
The ferry will run seven days a week through mid-August, and then run Wednesday through Sunday for the remainder of the season. Learn more about visiting Ship Island on the park’s website at https://www.nps.gov/guis/planyourvisit/ship-island.htm.
