Sheriff’s deputy remembered in Lincoln County
The Lincoln County community continues to mourn the loss of a sheriff’s deputy who was killed when a man went on a shooting rampage over the weekend.
Deputy William Durr is believed to be the first in the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department to be killed in the line of duty. He will be laid to rest Thursday.
Meantime, there is a growing memorial of cards, flowers, and pictures on his former patrol car. Brookhaven Resident Emily Warren said, “It has just hit our community so hard and it affects everyone. He was such a wonderful man, such a loving Christian man and when something like this happens, it’s just devastating.”
Lt. Kenneth Collins with Brookhaven PD said, “William Durr was one of the best officers you could have with you. When you got into a tight situation, William was always there with you.”
Willie Corey Godbolt faces one count of capital murder and seven counts of first-degree murder. The 35-year-old was released from a hospital after he was treated for a gunshot wound.
