Sheriff’s canine stabbed during stop in Hancock County
A Hancock County Sheriff’s canine is expected to make a full recovery after being stabbed yesterday during a traffic stop.
While attempting to make a traffic stop yesterday on Highway 603, the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department was led on a chase on to I-10. When the vehicle stopped, the driver fled on foot.
Three more suspects stayed in the vehicle where methamphetamine was found. While attempting to subdue the suspect the sheriff’s department released their canine Loco.
After Loco would not return, deputies found him with a stab wound to the abdomen. Loco was rushed to a vet where he is expected to make a full recovery.
The suspect, Jeremy Wayne Mitchell, was arrested almost two hours later and is being charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, possession of a controlled substance, and felony eluding.
