The Shed BBQ Steak Showdown

If you’re into barbeque then The Shed in Ocean Springs is your kind of place. This weekend, The Shed hosted the first annual ‘Barbeque Steak Showdown.’

Steak, ribs, and even Bloody Marys were all judged at the first annual ‘Barbeque Steak Showdown’ at The Shed, the first cookoff hosted by the Ocean Springs restaurant. The Shed Owner Brooke Lewis said, “We also have certified judges and three and four time world steak champion competitors, 95 teams that are out here all day competing for over $16,000 in cash prizes.”

The Steak Cookoff Association is a national organization that aims to bring rules and competitiveness to steak cookoffs. “SCA has over 300 events planned for 2019. So, we’re making history right here with a national sanctioning body and these guys are excited,” said Lewis.

The steak cookoff doesn’t just feature local teams, but competitors from all over the country. Iowa resident Mark Huntley said, “We traveled about 16 hours, just shy of 1,100 miles. We left Thursday afternoon. The temp was about three degrees when we left home.”

Although the travel can be strenuous, Huntley loves every second of the cookoffs, competing in over 20 competitions in the last year. “I’ve met people from Florida, Arkansas, Texas, Louisiana, Maryland. I’ve met people from everywhere. We’ve even got friends overseas in Australia, New Zealand.”

The Shed fully intends to make the ‘Barbeque Steak Showdown’ an annual event and they are already planning on bringing it back next year.
