Senator Wicker introduces Fishery Disasters Bill
One of our state’s top lawmakers have introduced new measures to get fishermen more relief quickly in the wake of an unprecedented disaster.
The ‘Fishery Failures: Urgently Needed Disaster Declarations Act,’ or the ‘Fishery FUNDD Act,’ would reform NOAA’s Resource Disaster Relief Program by allowing federal disaster funding to go directly into the fishing community.
In the past, it has taken years for communities to see any money requested for a fisheries disaster declaration.
Now, the timeline for the secretary to evaluate a request will be no more than 120 days.
“Freshwater has devastated our seafood industry and spurred the growth of harmful algal blooms which shut down our beaches, hurting tourism. This legislation would expedite the process by which fishermen receive disaster relief.”
