Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith Urges Funding to Help Fishermen and Businesses
And U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith is ramping up efforts to get money to help out fishermen and businesses adversely affected by the ongoing effects of the freshwater intrusion into our Coast waters.
The Bonnet Carre spillway could be closed during the second or third week of July, but today, trillions of gallons of fresh water continue to spill into the Mississippi Sound, killing marine life and wrecking the livelihoods of those who make a living off our Coast waters.
The senator is urging U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross to take swift action to approve a fishery disaster determination for the Mississippi Gulf Coast, using recently-approved funding. Emergency funds could be used to help those adversely affected by the spillway opening.
