Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Tours the Port of Gulfport

For months, there’s been talk about if jobs are coming to the port fast enough and if they will meet the job creation requirement by HUD’s deadline. Today Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Julian Castro put some of that speculation to rest.
Castro was here to see the progress the Coast has made since Katrina. His main focus was the Port of Gulfport.
Castro says while he understands recovery takes time, he’s here to make sure plans stay on target. He’s confident the port is well on its way to hitting the goal of creating 1300 jobs. “I am confident that the job goals will be achieved,” Castro said, “I believe that all the folks here on the ground understand the importance of hitting that job creation target and we will be strong partners to do everything we can to see that it stays on course.”
Castro also says in the past ten years HUD has become a stronger partner in disaster recovery to get aid to people more quickly, as well as have a bigger economic impact on the community.
