Scratch-off ticket sales begin today in Mississippi

It’s a historic day for our state as it marks the start of scratch-off lottery ticket sales.

Lotto fever was high at the Stop and Geaux in Gulfport for the first day of scratch-off ticket sales in the state. Some were looking to win big. “It’s a new thing this morning, I’m gonna try it and see if I can retire.”

Others were just excited for the opportunity. Wiggins resident Raymond Allen said, “It’s just nice to be able to have the opportunity to do something that other states have allowed their residents to do for longest. It’s the best thing Mississippi could have done.”

There are four types of tickets on sale now ranging from $1 to $5 in price with more tickets being added every two to three weeks at convenient stores, gas stations, and some casinos across the state. Stop and Geaux Accountant Samantha Belsome said, “We’ve anticipated this for the past couple of months. It was really exciting going through the application process and getting all of this started. We are excited to bring new customers in and the excitement of everybody winning.”

It’s been a waiting game for many of those who were eager to buy tickets on the first day of sales, many having to travel across state lines in the past just to scratch off.

Gulfport resident Jason Hair has been traveling to scratch off in the past and he was Stop and Geaux’s first winner to cash in. “I was feeling a little lucky. With them going on sale today you never know. I’ve been looking forward to this for a while now. I’ve been tired of driving over to Slidell to get lottery tickets.”

Hair, like many of the other lucky winners, was more excited about what the lottery will do for our state with revenue going back to help our bridges, roads, and education. “The tax revenue off of it ought to be a big plus, definitely towards schools, roads, and so forth. You know, definitely looking forward to it.”

‘Mega Millions’ and ‘Powerball’ tickets will go on sale in Mississippi on January 30th 2020.
