School Officers Get Some Extra Training

Police officers in schools are now juggling more balls than ever. They are often in charge of setting up school emergency action plans, running D.A.R.E. programs, and dealing with crimes committed on school grounds.

In order to help school resource officers be better prepared, the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the Biloxi Police Department are hosting a training session this week for law enforcement across the Gulf Coast. The main focus of the training Wednesday was partnering with multiple agencies to be ready for any emergency event.

Steve Harris, Resource Officer Trainer, says, “There’s a real big focus on active shooters right now, and it’s good that schools are focusing on that, but there’s a lot of other things that could impact them jurisdictionally, like severe weather, gas leaks.”

Officers from nearby states are also in attendance to share best practices with other law enforcement agencies.
