Saints Players Fight to Stay on the Roster

The Saints were in action Thursday night for their final preseason game against Baltimore before the regular season starts next Sunday against the Falcons. Thursday was the final opportunity for players to make a good impression on the coaching staff.

The Saints’ roster currently has 75 players, but the cuts are not over. Going into the final preseason game, the players are very aware of it. Linebacker Curtis Lofton says, “Is there an increased focus and intensity? Yes there is, and that’s what it needs to be. You know, this is a tough team to make.”

The coaching staff was looking closely Thursday night to see what players impressed them enough to make the final cut. One of the more compelling battles of the night was for second string quarterback. Will it be Luke McCown or Ryan Griffin? McCown says, “I’m working to keep my job and I’m gonna’ put my best foot forward every day. The reps that I get, I’m going to make the most of them, be the most efficient, accurate, polished player that I can be.”

Fans seem to think Griffin is going to be the one getting the roster spot. Jimmy Cothran, a Saints fan, says, “He’s just more consistent. I think he’s got a better placement and whenever it comes down to pressure that he’s actually aware of it and doesn’t just throw the ball over to the sidelines.”

Another popular spot in contention is the kicker. Shayne Graham or Derek Dimke? Right Tackle Zach Strief says, “You want to talk about people that are playing for their livelihoods. There’s a lot of roster spots still not set.”

The deadline for finalizing the 53 man roster is Saturday. Head Coach Sean Payton says making those decisions are never easy. Payton says, “Look, it’s the hard things about it and that never changes. You just hope they get another opportunity and have another chance.”

One thing’s certain; the players gave it their all Thursday night to secure those roster spots.
