Saints owner acknowledges Sean Payton’s future with team is uncertain

At a Mardi Gras related event in New Orleans, Saints owner Gayle Benson admitted to reporters she also doesn’t know what Head Coach Sean Payton’s plans are for the 2022 season.

Benson laughs and says we’ll all find out soon enough.

Payton, who helped bring the Saints their first Super Bowl in franchise history, is under contract with the Saints through 2024 and if he leaves, he could be walking away from at least $45 million.

Retirement could be an enticing route for Payton, who in the last two seasons, has had a constant rotation of on-field personnel due to injury and COVID protocols, had COVID twice himself, and lost his future Hall of Fame quarterback and team leader Drew Brees.

Multiple outlets have reported interest from TV networks in the 58-year-old coach if he were to decide to retire.

While Payton has not yet committed to coming back for the 2022 season, he also hasn’t said he’s not returning.
