Rivals Gulfport and Harrison Central clash in News 25 Game of the Week
Harrison Central has never been undefeated this late into the season in back-to-back seasons in program history.
Challenging that perfect record on Friday in the News 25 Game of the Week is rival Gulfport.
Both teams coming in with unbeaten district marks of 3-0, setting the stage for what’s sure to be a playoff caliber main event and then some.
The Red Rebels won last year’s game 27-7 at Milner Stadium in what was Gulfport’s first game in three weeks due to COVID-19.
In fact, Harrison Central was the first team in region 4 class 6A to beat the Admirals on the field since 2016.
Bragging rights always on the line when these two schools get together, and that’s even when first place isn’t on the line. Gulfport Head Coach John Archie said, “We’ve got a pretty good vibe. The kids are really excited. We haven’t been thinking about last year a lot. We’re just trying to get better. Each week we go out and play football every Friday night. A lot of chatter in the community and we try to block it ignore it as much as we can, but a game like this, with Harrison Central being 6-0, us being 5-2, you really can’t ignore it this week.”
Harrison Central Head Coach Casey Cain said, “As a head coach, if I’ve got to give a big speech and get them fired up – I don’t have to do that. They’re going to get fired up on their own because it’s something they grew up watching and everything, so it’s a big ball game. We’re both 3-0 and whoever wins Friday night has an awesome chance of making postseason play.”
Harrison Central rolls out the welcome mat for Gulfport at 7 p.m. Friday. Gulfport leads the all-time series 36-7.
