Residents work to rebuild after storms in Stone County
STONE COUNTY, Miss. (WXXV)- Many in Stone County are working to rebuild after a tornado ripped through Wiggins last week leaving a path of devastation and displacing many residents.
Two brothers, Shaun and Dillon, returned from work to find the houses they built completely destroyed.
Like many others impacted, they’re now relying on family, friends, and community support, working tirelessly to rebuild what they’ve lost.
We spoke with their mother, Barbie Waterbury, who describes the moment she learned about the damage. “It was a squeal of a cry that a parent never wants to hear, and all he kept saying is, I lost everything, it’s gone, everything is gone. And, and then my next son called Dylan, and the same thing happened. It was a swell. He said, there’s nothing here, it’s all gone. But it’s all gone. There’s nothing there. There was a, uh, the frame was there, um, but then the roof was gone, and then one of the other homes, the tree plopped right through it and took it all. So, and then there was too much damage for us to even try to save anything in any of the homes. It was, the roof was ripped off, walls, the floor looks like someone just took a vacuum cleaner and just sucked it out.”
Waterbury says she’ll be working with the Burger Bar in Ocean Springs, serving free hot meals and collecting donations at Vardaman Baptist Church in Wiggins. This is all to help provide relief for Stone County residents in need.
