Rescued stranded dolphin in Long Beach dies from injuries
The Institute for Marine Mammal Studies along with the Gulfport and Long Beach police departments helped rescue a stranded dolphin in distress early Monday morning in Long Beach.
Staff quickly responded, providing care for the adult female bottlenose dolphin on the beach.
The dolphin was transported to IMMS with lesions all over her skin and was listed in critical condition.
After the staff had been providing 24-hour care for the animal, she died from her injuries Monday night.
The staff stayed in the water with her to hold her up so that she could breathe.
A necropsy will be conducted Tuesday and samples will be sent to a lab to determine the cause of death.
