Remembering Edward ‘The Rev’ Powell Jr

Edward C. Powell Jr. AKA the Rev, a larger than life Coast icon, will soon be laid to rest.

News 25’s Toni Miles shows us the life of this long-time radio DJ and personality through the eyes of the man who called him dad.

Edward Powell III said, “One year he was the Grand Marshal at one of the Mardi Gras parades in Gulfport, and he took me with him, and we rode in it together.”

To many here in South Mississippi, Edward C. Powell Jr. was better known as the Rev. “For a while he went by Reverend Red but I think later in his career, he just started going by the Rev, or he was better known by his tag line, ” ‘It’s me R-E-V’.”

A native Coast son, the Rev hit the air waves at a young age and took DJing to a whole new level during his decades-long career. “He was straight forward, pretty blunt and he was never shy about expressing how he felt about things.”

Even barricading himself live on air until he negotiated a raise years ago, something his son and namesake Edward Powell III remembers well, along with other memories of this larger-than-life Coast personality, the man behind the mic who he called dad. “When he came to visit me in Los Angeles the one thing he wanted to go to his favorite game show, Let’s Make a Deal. He got to go. He had a really good time, but there were two things he got really upset about. One, he didn’t get to meet Wayne Brady, and second they would not let him put The Rev on his name tag.”

The Rev’s funeral services are set to take place at Nativity BVM Church off Howard Avenue in Biloxi on Wednesday at 3 p.m. Friends’ visitation is set to begin at 2 p.m. The procession to his burial will be led by vehicles from various Coast radio stations. “He used to joke around a lot that whenever he did die, he wanted all the vehicles from the radio stations to be in the procession. Talking to a few people, it sounds like that’s going to happen.”

Since The Rev’s death was unexpected, a GoFundMe account has been set up to help with funeral expenses. Click here if you would like to donate.

The Rev, Edward C. Powell Jr. was just 63-years-old.
