Red Cross training volunteers
South Mississippi residents are taking the extra step to help out the Lone Star state and are training to become Red Cross volunteers.
The American Red Cross in Gulfport offered ‘just in time’ classes for those interested in becoming Red Cross disaster response volunteers. These volunteers will be trained to help feed, provide shelter and transportation to Hurricane Harvey victims.
One volunteer tells News 25 it’s the least he can do after experiencing what happened when Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005. Red Cross Volunteer Leon Sootin said, “If people need help and it’s in our nature, seems like to help, I’ll do whatever I can. I’m sure just like during Katrina when we needed help here a lot of people went out of their way and out of their lives to come help us.”
