Red Cross in need of volunteers

The American Red Cross of Southeast Mississippi needs your help. With disasters happening almost every day, the organization needs more volunteers.

For months, people in northern and central Mississippi have been dealing with heavy flooding and the aftermath of tornadoes. Red Cross Executive Director John McFarland said, “Eighteen counties around central and north Mississippi, so we have been responding to that and we are still doing that. Of course, now we have more water coming down the Mississippi so we will probably be going right back to it in another week.”

The flooding is caused in part due to heavy snow up north that is now melting faster than normal. All of that snow is coming right down to the Mississippi River. The best way to describe what these conditions have left behind? “Wet. Very wet. Of course, we had some tornadoes that blew through here as well so you not only have the flood damage, but the tornado damage.”

To help the victims of the flooding, the Red Cross has had boots on the ground finding shelter for people and providing food and comfort to those affected.

More than 200 care kits were given out to folks around Columbus, Mississippi after the tornado. The care kits contain personal hygiene items so people can freshen up and shower after a disaster.

Their efforts are far from over as more flooding is expected to hit the area and the Red Cross needs more trained volunteers to help with the situation.  Angie Grajeda said, “It is a rewarding experience, when somebody has lost their home and they have nowhere to go, to be the person who is receiving them in a shelter or handing them a hot meal or giving them cleaning supplies. Sometimes you are the first person they come in contact with after that disaster and knowing you are giving that hope to someone is a good feeling.”

The Red Cross will be hosting a volunteer open house at the Gulfport office on the last Friday of every month from 9 a.m. until noon.
