Ramping up efforts to stop drunk driving
We are in the peak of holiday season so plenty of parties and gatherings are on everyone’s calendar and for a lot of people that includes drinking.
Gulfport Police and the Transportation Department are working together to remind everyone of the importance of planning a sober ride home before heading out to any holiday festivities.
If available use ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft. If you see a drunk driver call police immediately.
If you have a friend who is about to drive after drinking, take the keys away and arrange a safe ride for them. Gulfport Police PIO Jason Ducré said, “The holidays are supposed to be some of the merriest times of the year. Unfortunately they are also one of the deadliest times of the year with drunk drivers. If you feel different, you drive different. It’s simple. If you’ve had a couple of beers, be safe, plan ahead, and get a designated driver.”
Almost 30 percent of crashes in 2017 were caused by drunk driving. In December alone 885 people lost their lives.
