Rally to Legalize Marijuana Held in Ocean Springs Thursday

A move is gaining momentum to get lawmakers to consider dropping Mississippi’s ban on cannabis in our state.

The Mississippi Alliance for Cannabis held a rally Thursday night in Ocean Springs to ask residents to sign a petition to have Proposition 48 added to the 2016 ballot, in which voters will decide whether or not to legalize marijuana for recreational and medicinal use. Supporters of the move say it’s senseless that our state has not already made pot legal due to its medical benefits, as well as its potential for much-needed tax revenue in the state.

Justin Lawsen, an advocate for legalization, says, “I’m trying to get marijuana legalized, but on the hemp side of it. Hemp’s gonna’ be a cash crop for the State of Mississippi. It will provide jobs in distribution, in manufacturing, farming, transportation.”
