Railroad crossing closures across Biloxi
In East Biloxi, railroad crossings closures are happening today. The city is warning drivers to be aware of detours and take alternative routes.
Two of the six East Biloxi railroad crossings are now closed. The railroad crossing closure between Biloxi and CSX Railroad Transportation is now underway. Vincent Creel with the City of Biloxi said, “Of those 29 crossings, 21 of them are east of Keesler Air Force Base in a two-mile stretch. We have a crossing just about every block in East Biloxi.”
Starting February 8th, temporary road closures go into place. One of those closing railroad crossings is Ester Blvd and Nixon Street. Drivers are asked to either go east or west of that exit to get to the other side.
Follow detour signs. Gray Construction Superintendent T.J. Miles said, “We’ll have a closure sign on the south side of the tracks and the north side here.”
Residents have been aware of these railroad crossing closures since last August. “After much notice we are closing Nixon and Dorries Street. We’re going to be closing Delauney later.”
CSX Railroad Transportation will complete the job. “The 23rd or 25th of February, CSX is going to come do their part. All they go to do is drain this ditch and dress it up with gravel and stuff.”
Creel tells News 25 why Biloxi decided to close the Nixon and Dorries crossing first. “They have a low traffic count there. In addition, we’re building a road that runs along side of the CSX railway that will provide people an alternate route.”
In two to three weeks, temporary closures will be permanent.
