Question of residency for candidate in District 119 State Rep. race

An incumbent state representative in our area is challenging a recent ruling of the Mississippi Democratic Party’s executive committee in regards to her opponent in an upcoming race.

State House Representative Sonya Williams-Barnes filed a petition challenging the committee’s decision and whether her Democratic opponent has met the residence requirements to legally run in this race.

If the committee’s decision is upheld, there will be a primary on August 6th. There are no Republican candidates for this House seat, so if both candidates are on the August primary ballot, whoever wins the primary will hold the District 119 seat in the next term.

The state’s general election is set for November 5th.
