Property Taxes in Biloxi to Increase October 1st

On October 1st, property taxes for the City of Biloxi are scheduled to increase a third of a mill to reimburse the school district for a budget shortfall. The total increase will be around $3 for every $100,000 of property value.

The increase is part of Biloxi’s $53 million budget, approved Tuesday by the City Council, which will also take effect October 1st. Projected gaming revenue for the city remain the same as last year, at $17 million, but still down from pre-Katrina highs of $21.5 million in 2004. Sales tax is expected to climb 2%, continuing an upward trend from last year.

Kenny Glavan, President of the Biloxi City Council, says, “We’re very optimistic. We see our business community gaining confidence, and I think we’re putting things in place that allows the business community to be successful, and we see that continuing for a long time.”

The budget now goes to the Mayor for his consideration.
