Program Helps Youth with Career Readiness

A new, free program offered by Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College’s Perkinston campus offers a helping hand to young people in Stone County looking to complete their high school diploma and train for a career.
The WIOA Youth out of School Program is designed for Stone County residents between the ages of 16 and 24. Students will learn things like how to dress and what to expect from a job interview. It also links students to paid internships related to their career choice.
News 25 spoke with one participant who says she was forced to drop out of high school due to health issues. She says she is grateful to be given a second chance. WIOA student Mikayla Crawford said, “Life is not always, it doesn’t go as planned always. It kind of gives yourself a chance to redeem yourself a little bit and still be successful.”
WIOA Youth Program instructor Irvette Dove said, “It helps these students realize that there is more out there for them. They can have some career choices that they may not have thought they could have. They are able to choose a career and get on path to be able to achieve that career.”
There are a number of qualifications to be eligible for this program. For more information or to apply, contact Irvette Dove at (601)-528-8486 or at Irvette.dove@mgccc.edu.
