Preparing for hurricane season

Hurricane season doesn’t start until June 1st, but for responding agencies it’s never too early to get prepared.
Over the weekend, members from the Mississippi National Guard participated in hurricane exercises at the Combat Readiness Training Center in Gulfport. The purpose of the exercise is to prepare Mississippi guardsmen to respond to weather threatening the state and to maintain the ability to deploy forces even under serious weather conditions. Director of Military Support Lt. Col. Jody Smith said, “We are all citizens of this state. It’s obvious when we get out here and we go to respond to something, it means something to us. We get called overseas a lot by the federal government, but to respond in your own backyard, this is personal. We want to make sure we do this right because we are citizens and it’s our own backyard that we’re working in.”
The 2017 hurricane season officially begins on June 1st and ends November 30th.
