Popp’s Ferry Bridge struck by vessel

The Popp’s Ferry Bridge in Biloxi was closed for nearly four hours this afternoon after it was struck by a tugboat pushing three barges.

Biloxi officials say the incident took place just before 1 p.m. The vessel ‘Miss Laurie’ and the barges carrying construction equipment hit the bridge’s timber bumper system before hitting the bridge.

The city says after inspection, crews did not find any structural damage to the bridge.

Eyewitness Steven Villarreal witnessed the collision as he was checking crab traps near his residence and described the scene. “When the bridge opened, I started watching. I saw it and I was like ‘I don’t think he looks in a good angle.’ So, I just kept watching and then he started hitting the pylons. It sounded like a tree snapping in a hurricane because the pylons, he just snapped them.”

The bridge will close again tomorrow morning from 5 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. for further inspections. Previous collisions with the bridge occurred in 2009 and 2013.
