Poplarville cool under pressure: Hornets relaxed leading up to 4A South State title

In Friday’s 4A South State championship game between Poplarville and East Central, something is going to happen that hasn’t happened all season: one of these two schools is going to take a loss.
That’s just the way it has to be with the Hornets of Poplarville still perfect at 13-0 and the other Hornets from East Central still unbeaten at 12-0. There’s only one spot up for grabs in the state championship game and what’s being dubbed as the Hornet Bowl will determine who grabs it.
On Poplarville’s side, Head Coach Jay Beech says he’s thankful his team is still practicing over the Thanksgiving holidays and he’s not letting the heat of the pressure packed moment get too big for his players. “This week has been the least amount of pressure we’ve felt in a while around here, I think. I think people expected us to get to this point, but now that we’re here we can just play football now.”
Left Guard Heath Smith said, “It’s going to be a tough one. The pressure is definitely building up, but if we keep our heads in it we should come out with a win.”
Cornerback D.J. Travis said, “Well last year, it’s still got something in my heart. We went down to State, didn’t really go our way. But this year, my senior year, we’ve got another chance to prove a lot of people wrong so that’s what we’re going to try to do. Both of us obviously are undefeated, so somebody has got to take a loss.”
Friday’s showdown will take place in Poplarville at 7 p.m.
