Pets need warmth too as cold weather moves in

This is your reminder to bring those pets inside. If you can’t, the Humane Society has some quick tips to make sure your animals are safe.

With cold weather approaching, professionals at the Humane Society in Gulfport recommend setting up outdoor pets with shelter – if you can’t bring them inside.

Development Director Katie King tells News 25 that if it’s too cold for us, it’s too cold for our four-legged companions. Common sense is king. “There’s a lot of DIY projects that you can do for safe shelter pets on the internet. You can also take an old Igloo cooler and cut a hole in it, make sure it has proper bedding. You can use straw, hay.”

Take care when picking out a suitable shelter for your pet, as one that is too large could be drafty and cold. “It’s best to have a shelter that’s just big enough for the animal to fit inside, where it’s not exposed to wind and rain coming in. You can also use a crate or a pallet and lean it up against a lean-to or a building.”

Just a reminder, the Humane Society is currently running an adoption special on dogs who are positive for heartworms. Through Valentine’s Day, the shelter will pay for all expenses related to their heartworm treatment. Project Manager Arin King said, “With the adoption special that we are currently running, we are treating all the heartworm positive dogs in the shelter. Adopters can save anywhere between $300 and $600 in our wellness clinic for their treatment.”
