Pearl River County celebrates America250 over the weekend

PICAYUNE, Miss. (WXXV)- The Stars and Stripes were flying a little early this weekend as Pearl River County kicked off its celebration of America’s 250th birthday.

Crosby Commons Park in Picayune was filled with patriotic pride as Pearl River County celebrated America’s upcoming 250th birthday with local vendors, live entertainment, the Victory Belles, the South Mississippi Heart Stompers and a laser light show. Attorney General Lynn Fitch said, “What an exciting time for us all to be together to celebrate our great country. We live in the greatest country in the world. America is the best from the freedoms we enjoy, the opportunity to pledge the allegiance to our flag, to sing our national anthem, to pray together, to fellowship, it doesn’t get any better here. I’m so grateful for our founding fathers, who stood up and believed in independence for America.”

The celebration also honored the men and women who served our country, including a World War II veteran who is more than 100 years old and a living reminder of the sacrifices made for our freedoms. WWII Veteran Sgt. Sidney Worthy said, “Very glad to be out here, very surprised to be out here, and gracious to God that I’m still in this condition that I’m in. I served in England for about a year and France for 6 months and I’m enjoying every day.”

This celebration allowed the community to enjoy a day of festivities and reflect on the journey that brought us here while uplifting the future generations who will carry our legacy forward.
