Ole Miss Student Sentenced
One of the former Ole Miss students accused of placing a noose around the statue of James Meredith learned his fate Thursday. Austin Reed Edenfield was sentenced to one year probation along with 50 hours community service. In federal court in Oxford he was also ordered for substance abuse and mental health treatment. On March 24, Eden field pled guilty to the misdemeanor charge. The charge said Eden field helped others use threatens force to intimidate African-American students and university employees. Overseeing Judge Mike Mills told Edenfield his action came from “Somewhere dark.” in February 2014, “Edenfield” and others placed the noose and a former Georgia state flag on the statue. Meredith was the first African American student to attend the university.
