Old Gulfport Skate Park Could Become Ice Skating Rink

Harrison County Supervisors are considering several proposals to bring new life to the old abandoned skate park off Debuys Road in Gulfport. One group has a plan to turn it into a year round ice skating rink.
Richard Dedeaux is part of a group that hopes to lease the facility at 269 Debuys Road and convert the existing inline rink to an ice rink.
He says the proposal is designed to be a sports facility that offers activities benefitting the whole community such as free skating instructions, offering after school activities for students and other onsite activities at no charge. “It is the best use for the building, we feel. We feel there’s going to be a large participation for kids and there will be also some demand from other markets, people would come for tournaments and that type of thing. A lot of kids would come in year’s past, we’ve had kids teams from Lafayette and Pensacola come to tournaments here and if we had a full time facility we feel it would be used that way,” said Dedeaux.
Other proposals for the property include transforming it into a movie studio or an indoor soccer facility. Supervisors are tentatively set to vote on it next month.
