Officials offer tips to stay safe on the water

The State Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks is giving a heads up for boaters ahead of the weekend.

Everyone is reminded to have their life jackets before leaving the ramp. These jackets should be Coast Guard approved, in good conditions, the right size, and easily accessible. Children 12 and under must wear lifejackets.

Boaters should also make sure to have a throwable device and a fire extinguisher.

Valid registration is also required and a boater’s education card as well for anyone born after June 30, 1980.

The department also warns that recent flooding has left many waterways higher and faster than normal.

Submerged debris, stronger currents, and changing conditions might not be visible so extra caution is advised.
