Ocean Springs Teen Murders Neighbor with Samurai Sword

Monday, an Ocean Springs man was in a Jackson County courtroom, accused of killing his neighbor with a samurai sword. The stabbing death has left two young children and a wife without a father and a husband.

Johnny Romero, 18, looked scared and distraught as he sat chained in a red jumpsuit during his initial hearing before a Jackson County judge Monday afternoon. The Ocean Springs resident has been charged with killing his neighbor, 29 year old, Shannon Bowen, by stabbing him in the chest with a samurai sword over the weekend. Bill Carlton, a friend of Bowen, says, “Now for some reason, he hated Shannon. He’s the only one around here that did.”

Monday, Romero was officially charged with second degree murder. His bond was set at $100,000. According to police, late Friday night, Romero and Bowen were involved in an altercation in between their homes on North 12th Street in Ocean Springs.

Police say both men had been drinking. According to family members, the altercation between Bowen and Romero occurred between the two houses in the front lawn. Family members say after Bowen was stabbed, he retreated back to his house to find his wife. Phyllis Lane, Bowen’s mother in law, says, “It was Shannon. He’d been stabbed. She helped him into the house and he died in her arms right inside the door.”

Bowen had a wife and two young children. He worked at Wal-Mart and is described as a hard worker and a friend to many. Carlton also says, “He’s just a good guy. Everybody liked him, and he had spent the whole day romancing his wife because it was her birthday.”

News 25 reached out to friends and family of Romero, but no one was available for an interview. Romero’s employer, who did not wish to be identified, says he was shocked when he heard the news. He described Romero as quiet and very polite.
