Ocean Springs Superintendent helps offset meal charges for students

The superintendent of the Ocean Springs School District is making sure every student in the school district eats every day.

Dr. Bonita Coleman recently attended an educational research and development institute event with other school district superintendents as part of professional development.

She received a $2,000 honorarium as part of her attendance at the event and made the decision to donate the money to the school district’s child nutrition department as a way to help offset some meal balances in the district.

Dr. Coleman hopes the donation goes a long way in helping families and replenishing the district’s ‘Angel Fund’ that helps with student meal charges year-round. “So far, I’ve been able to do this a couple of times. This was the largest amount, but it’s really important to me if I’m going to spend time away from my district that I’ll always, if there’s an opportunity, I want to make sure that I’m able to give back in that way.”

If you would like to make a contribution to a school’s ‘Angel Fund’ and help out with meal charges call the district’s Office of Child Nutrition at 228-875-7706.
