Ocean Springs’ School to Celebrate International Walk to School Day on Oct. 8th
The event will begin at 6:45 a.m. with kids, parents, and community leaders walking from Ocean Springs Greyhound Stadium. Walkers will begin walking at 7:00 a.m. and will be welcomed at the school to start class. Parents are asked to walk with their children to increase awareness and safety. Other special activities associated with the walk include snacks giveaways for participants.
Walk to School Day events raise awareness of the need to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion, and concern for the environment. The events build connections between families, schools and the broader community.
To prepare for this event, teachers have been discussing safety in class and will have speakers and videos for the children during the week. The event is being organized by the Ocean Springs School District with assistance from the City of Ocean Springs. This will be the second Walk-to-School event for Pecan Park Elementary.
