Ocean Springs High Student Arrested for Making Threats

An Ocean Springs High School student has been charged with intimidation, threatening, or coercion after authorities discovered threats on a social media site.

The 17 year old’s name is not being released to the media, but News 25 was told the student posted the threat on Yik Yak in mid-September. After discovering the post, the high school contacted the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, who worked on the case with the Ocean Springs Police Department, and determined the threat was legitimate and serious enough to warrant an arrest.

Jackson County Sheriff, Mike Ezell, says, “We have to get it right every time, and so we have to investigate everything that comes to us, and that’s what we try to do as professional and low key as possible, especially when it involves a school district ‘cause we don’t want to send the wrong signal. We don’t want to send out something that’s not going on, other than maybe a rumor.”

Ezell advises parents to be vigilant about keeping up with your children’s activity on social media sites. The post has been removed from the Yik Yak site.
