Ocean Springs football hosting Oak Grove in 6A second round Friday
Ever since Ocean Springs beat Clinton by one point in double overtime all the way back in week one, the Greyhounds haven’t played a game decided by less than 23 points.
That’s very likely to change when Oak Grove comes to town on Friday.
Introducing the reigning 6A state champion Warriors, who are certainly no strangers to the second round of the playoffs. They are the defending south state champions three times running and five times in the last eight years with two gold balls to show for it.
Oak Grove actually beat the Greyhounds in the first round in 2019, but a lot has changed in two years.
Ocean Springs now led by second year Head Coach Blake Pennock and Southern Miss baseball commit Bray Hubbard at quarterback, who was just named Mr. Football for Class 6A on Monday.
The Greyhounds are the last undefeated team in 6A and now they want what the Warriors have. Hubbard said, “Their quarterback is good. Their offense is really good. Their defense is good. So, the biggest key is don’t give over turnovers. Don’t lose the ball. Try to capitalize on every possession you have because we’re going to get a lot of possessions in that game because they score fast and we score fast.”
Coach Pennock said, “Coach Causey at Oak Grove, I mean that’s just a super amazing program, just the level of success that they’ve had in the past, in these last several years has been just unbelievable. And you have to have great players, a solid program, great coach and leadership and they do a tremendous job there. So, they definitely have our respect. And then at the same time, we’re trying to get to that level. And so, we understand about the moment not being too big. We’re going to go in there and make sure we prepare the right way, and at the end of the day it’s a game. It’s a football game, so once it gets kicked off and the lights are on, it’s just time to go play.”
OS and OG will kick things off at 7 p.m. Friday from Hugh Pepper Field.
