Ocean Springs Attacker in Custody

The man accused of brutally beating and raping an Ocean Springs apartment manager back on September 10th is behind bars tonight.
Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Department arrested Cameron Dwayne May of Biloxi today in the parking lot of a Goodwill store in Destin, Florida around 12:05 p.m. Lori Massey, coordinator at Mississippi Coast Crime Stoppers, said, “Once they put out the photo of the suspect, I was thinking it was going to come pretty quickly. I’m really excited that we got that great news that the suspect was caught.”
Robin Cooley, one of the founders of Women Against Violence Everywhere, coordinated a vigil for the victim of the attack, and others like her, in Ocean Springs on Thursday. Cooley describes May’s arrest as “relief”. “I think the whole community has probably been worried about their regular routine and can just sleep easier tonight knowing that he’s in custody.”
Anonymous tips were a huge part of the investigation. Mississippi Coast Crime Stoppers received about 12 to 15 tips that helped lead to the location and arrest of May. “Law enforcement putting out all the information about a crime and about a suspect and saying for the public to call Crime Stoppers,” said Massey.
Dominion Apartment staff has been in contact with the victim’s family. They did not release information on her condition but tell News 25 they are grateful for the support received since the incident.
“I think that people have to remember that this is something that happens every day, everywhere. And the only thing that we can do to fight it is raise awareness and that’s what we’re trying to do,” said Cooley.
Cameron D. May is currently in Okaloosa County Jail awaiting an extradition hearing.
