November is ‘Adopt a Senior Pet’ Month

November is ‘Adopt a Senior Pet’ Month and with a little more than a week left, you still have time to visit your local animal shelter and take home a senior furry friend.

The Humane Society of South Mississippi has 282 pets in their care right now and many of them are five years and older.

One of those pets is Gretchen. She is seven years old and currently one of the shelters longest residents. Gretchen is heartworm positive, but her treatment is fully sponsored.

HSSM’s Development Director Katie King says the shelter’s adoption numbers have been steady this year, but she continues to encourage everyone to open their hearts to the benefits of a senior pet. “So senior pets a lot of times are already going to be housebroken, they’re not going to chew up everything in your house, they’re going to provide a lot of love, they’re often a lot calmer, so they don’t take quite as much energy and effort, they just want to be loved, and they want to be in a quiet and cozy home. Our longest resident Choco got adopted last week and he was a senior dog also. So, we were super excited about that and we have several others just like Gretchen here waiting to find their forever home.”

Adoption feeds for senior pets range from $20 to $50.
