Nichols Elementary to Double Enrollment Next Year

The Biloxi School District has announced Nichols Elementary School will double its enrollment next year.

The kindergarten and first grade classes will move to Nichols from nearby Gorenflo. Nichols closed in 2010 due to low enrollment following Hurricane Katrina. Community members came together to form a Save our Schools Coalition, fighting to have Nichols reopened, saying the elementary school was vital for east Biloxi children.

Jeremy Eisler, a lawyer for the Mississippi Center for Justice, says, “It’s a step in the right direction. We’d like to thank the board and Dr. McMillian for doing it. We think that it will be a terrific thing for the children of east Biloxi and are so happy to see it.”

Right now, Nichols Elementary is housing both Biloxi pre-k and Head Start. Next year, they are expecting to house a total of 400 students.
