NFHS Baseball Rules Committee approves pitching revision

Between Vancleave’s Bailee Hendon, Gulfport’s Blake Johnson, East Central’s Brad Cumbest, Harrison Central’s Brendan Hardy, and the two-headed monster from George County, among several others, we saw dominant high school pitching on the Coast in 2018.

Now, there’s a new rule that will affect all prep hurlers next year. Today, the National Federation of State High School Associations Baseball Rules Committee made a big change with the focus on pitching mechanics.

The governing body is eliminating the requirement of the entire pivot foot to be in contact with the pitcher’s plate going into effect for the 2019 season.

The rationale behind the revision is a result of the difficulty for pitchers to consistently make contact with the pitcher’s plate while pivoting.
